Consell, an inland town where its antiquities market is held every Sunday.

Update 09/02/23. Consell is located in the interior of the island and not too far distant from the small towns of Binissalem and Santa María del Camí. Here is a town of about 3,800 contented enough citizens where, as in most interior locations, agriculture and livestock has underpinned the local economy for centuries. Today, most of the community's employed and business community have gravitated to the Palma de Mallorca and other tourist areas of interest. Like its neighbour, Binissalem, Consell is surrounded by arable vineyards and the community has an excellent reputation for its bodegas (wine stores) where the best quality wines, many local, can be browsed, bought and enjoyed.

In the centre of this interior resort, as so often, is to be found the community’s Ayuntamiento (Town Hall). Again, as one might expect, an interesting Church and main square where the weekly market takes place. The Church of Our Lady of the Visitation is the most striking sandstone building and attracts a great mny tourists to wonder at it, and of course, to take their photographs. Especially charming, the tower's stunningly beautiful rose window and the clock on the stone-built façade. The Ayuntamiento, opposite the Church, is built of ancient stone and in architectural straight lines.

Consell has a lot of cultivation area dedicated to the vineyard with several renowned wine cellars.

Besides the traditional weekly market that is held each Thursday, Consell has gained an enviable reputation for the outstanding antique market that is held each Sunday. A little outside town, this busy and very interesting market is to be found in the pocket industrial area of Consell. This antique fair is one of the most popular such events on the island of Mallorca.

The most popular festivals are Consell de Sant Bartomeu, the patron of the town. This fiesta is celebrated on August 24 each year where there are a great many unique performances. These include exhibitions, community street restaurants where local, families and group can enjoy the atmosphere and café society together. There is much street theatre and performances to engage and cheer one's sensibilities.

Also noteworthy the Festival of Sant Antoni which takes place on on January 17 each year. Here are celebrated the traditional blessings of animals. Later, there is an afternoon parade of floats that draw the fiesta to a gay close. Also a warm welcome, hot if you get too close, the traditional bonfire. Upon this pyre the locals relish in their toasts of butifarrones, spicy sausage and other typical Mallorcan products from pork products.

How to arrive:

Consell is located 25 km from Palma de Mallorca, the island's capital city. Consell is easily accessible. If travelling by road from the capital you are best advised to take the motorway signposted to Alcudia and to then exit where Binissalem and Consell are signposted. Both are local communities.
